Statement of Intended Use, Indications, Contraindications (nonclinical)

Intended Use

The BrainMaster provides visual and/or auditory feedback, and computer control signals based on parameters derived from spectral analysis of the electroencephalogram (EEG) signal.

Indications

This version of BrainMaster software and documentation is intended for use in education, research, computer-controlled systems, art, entertainment, virtual reality , and related applications. There may be additional benefits to brain fitness and performance improvement, as detailed below.

Additional Benefits

Learning to control EEG brain waves can have beneficial effects, as a result of learning to achieve a desired mental state. Such benefits may be achieved in the course of using this software. While these benefits may improve mental effectiveness, no medical claims are made. Examples are as follows:

Reducing theta brain waves while simultaneously raising alpha waves enhances concentration resulting in:

    1. Reduction of errors
    2. Greater attention to detail
    3. Increased self control
    4. Sustained attention to tasks
    5. Ability to shut off environmental distractions
Increasing the percentage of alpha brain waves enhances creativity providing:
    1. Increased decision making capabilities
    2. Increased new idea generation
    3. Improved accuracy
    4. Improved general relaxation
Increasing the percentage of beta or low beta waves can enhance mental performance, alertness, and the ability to concentrate. However, excessive beta training may cause anxiety or related side effects.

Warnings and Contraindications

The BrainMaster should not be used in individuals with the following conditions:

    1. Individuals who experience anxiety or an unpleasant feeling associate with EEG biofeedback (Neurofeedback) training.
    2. In epilepsy, there may be a causal relationship between EEG training of certain EEG frequencies, and incidence of seizure.
Certain individuals may be unable to learn to control the EEG through biofeedback (Neurofeedback).

You may wish to discontinue use if periodic monitoring of progress indicates that the individual is not learning despite adequate review of instructions for feedback.
