| FlexTrodes - What Are They?
FlexTrodes are simple, clean, self-abrading and self-cleaning, paste-free and gel-free electrodes. They are intended for EEG, EMG, EKG, and related body potential recording work. They are suitable for use to contact and record biopotentials from the head, face, and other body areas. They are especially useful in cases where it is difficult to get a good connection through the hair, and where chemicals, gels, or pastes are undesirable. What can I do with them? FlexTrodes can be used with the BrainMaster recording modules, or with similar instruments such as the WaveRider, BrainTracer, Mind Mirror, POD, and so forth. They can also be used with any physiological instrumentation that expects a conventional, metal/saline type of electrode, with a secure connection to the head, face, or other body area. FlexTrodes can be used in combination with other electrodes, providing maximum flexibility. What do they consist of? Each consists of an adjustable plastic holder, a contact surface, a sponge matrix, and an embedded electrode of gold, silver, stainless-steel, or tin. This assembly fits into a retaining ring that can be affixed to a headband, hat, or other device. The electrolyte consists of water mixed with salt (sodium chloride) or baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), and optionally, shampoo as a wetting agent. The electrode itself is of a typical commercial variety. NOTE: FlexTrodes are not approved for clinical use, and no such claims are made. FlexTrodes Instructions for Use: FlexTrodes are used to obtain a clean, wet, physically secure electrical connection to the skin. If the connection is to be made to the scalp, it is necessary to either wet the hair beneath the electrode, to part the hair beneath the electrode, or both. Prepare an electrolyte solution as follows: To an 8-oz squirt-bottle or jar, add 1 tablespoon of salt, and (optionally) ½ teaspoon of baby shampoo. Fill with water and mix. The salt is necessary to conduct the electrical potential from the skin to the electrode. The baby shampoo is to make the solution more able to penetrate the hair, and wet it thoroughly, down to the scalp. FlexTrodes are used in one of two ways: (1) By putting on the headset or supporting gear first, preparing the surface, and then inserting the electrode, and (2) By first installing the electrode into the headset or supporting gear, and then putting the entire assembly in place. Which of these you use depends on the specific situation. Also, once the electrodes are put in place, it is possible to remove and reinsert them as needed, to ensure best contact. It is also possible to add more electrolyte once the electrodes are in place, to maintain good electrical contact. For best contact, observe the following: Ensure that the contact surface is clean, and essentially free of layers of hair. Move or part the hair, to give the electrode access to contact the scalp. Moisten the contact surface. Use the squirt bottle, and/or a Q-tip, if desired. Rub or clean the skin surface, if you experience contact difficulties. Electrode prep gel is generally unnecessary, but can be used if desired Insert the electrode until the sponge securely touches the skin. Add electrolyte fluid as needed, to maintain a moist, electrical contact. Instructions for Storage and Re-use: For convenience, FlexTrodes can be stored in the conductive solution, leaving them ready for re-use at any time. In addition, this helps to keep the electrode surface stable. The electrodes can be removed from the headband or support, and kept in a plastic film container, with the electrode wire produding under the lid. To protect this wire, it is best to cut a small notch in the lid, and in the can rim, to avoid putting undue pressure on the lead wire. FlexTrodes are supplied packaged in this type of container. The container can be filled ½ way with the same electrolyte prepared for use with them, and electrodes can be stored in this fashion. NOTE: FlexTrodes are not approved for any clinical purposes, and no such claims are made.
